AISD Is Hiring an Equity Officer
The new position will promote educational equity and inclusiveness for the district’s 80,000-plus students.

Austin ISD’s leaders all say that equity is an important goal, and the district wants to add to its executive team an equity officer who’ll be asked to “promote and sustain educational equity and inclusiveness” for 80,000-plus students, according to AISD’s job posting. In a recent interview with the Chronicle, Superintendent Paul Cruz envisioned an office that would first focus on “equitable student outcomes,” and then on all aspects of district operations.

Get to Know…Superintendent Dr. Gonzalo Salazar, Los Fresnos CISD
The Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Gonzalo Salazar as Superintendent of Schools in June of 2006.

With more than 20 years of experience in education, Salazar has a proven record of accomplishments that include working collaboratively with staff and the Board of Trustees towards increasing graduation rates and improving educational outcomes for students.
TALAS Mentoring program seeking candidates

Free Meals Coming To Lockhart ISD
Students in the Lockhart Independent School District will be able to eat breakfast and lunch for free beginning in the fall. 

In their meeting Monday night, the LISD Board of Trustees approved a change to its policy for serving meals under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2019-2020 school year.

ALAS names Dr. Arsenio Romero Superintendent of the Year
The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) awarded Dr. Arsenio Romero, Superintendent of Deming Public Schools, the National ALAS Superintendent of the Year Award. ALAS is a national coalition of public school leaders from around the country. The focus of ALAS is to provide leadership that assures every school in America effectively serves the educational needs of all students with an emphasis on Latinx youth, by building capacity, promoting best practices, and transforming educational institutions.
When A Mexican American Student Group Voted To Change Its Name Controversy Ensued
At its annual conference earlier this month, the nation’s oldest Mexican American student group decided to change its name. Student leaders said it’s a push to be more inclusive of other Latin American identities. As NPR’s Adrian Florido reports, that has sparked a big debate among Mexican Americans.
